The Sassi–Superga tramway is one of Italy’s most fascinating and historic railways. The original line operated using a cable-driven traction system developed by engineer Tommaso Agudio. In 1934, the line was closed for a full overhaul. A year later, it reopened with a modernized rack-and-pinion system, replacing the cable with an electric motor system. The new 3.1 km route adopted the Strub rack system, allowing it to handle gradients of up to 21% with improved safety and efficiency.
Affectionately known as the “Dentiera” (or “Dentera” in Piedmontese), this iconic rack railway continues to link Sassi with the Basilica of Superga at an elevation of 672 meters, offering passengers stunning panoramic views of Turin and the surrounding Alpine arc.
